Buying a car in Arkansas.

By The Model Black · Updated October 7, 2026

Arkansas charges sales and use tax (collected by DFA at registration) of 6.5% at the state level, and local jurisdictions add their own, which brings a typical vehicle to about 9%. A trade-in does reduce the taxable price, which is real money on the deal.

Lease

To see a lease, pick a vehicle. A lease is priced on one car: what it is expected to be worth at the end (its residual) and the leasing company's money factor change by model and by month.

Pick a vehicleHow leasing works

An estimate on the numbers you type, not an offer of credit or a quote from any dealership. Starting loan rates are Rateous's rates for each credit range and term; they are not an offer from any lender. The documentary fee starts at an example figure, the state's legal cap where it has one or $599 where it does not, not any dealership's fee; each dealership sets its own. Taxes and state fees are estimates for Arkansas; the dealership's paperwork and your motor vehicle agency have the final numbers. Nothing you type is sent, saved, or used to check your credit.

How the tax works.

Sales tax on vehicles is paid to DFA when the vehicle is registered (within 30 days), at the state rate plus the city and county rates of the buyer's registration address.

In Little Rock, Pulaski County's 1.0% and the city's 1.5% add 2.5% to the state rate. Combined rates exceed 11% in a few Arkansas cities, where the local share reaches about 5.0%.

Manufacturer rebates are not deducted from the taxable price in Arkansas (DFA treats them as part of the consideration); dealer discounts reduce the price.

Vehicles priced under $4,000 are exempt; used vehicles $4,000-$10,000 taxed at 3.5% state; new vehicles $4,000 and up at the full 6.5% (7% in Texarkana).
Trade-ins: Tax is computed on the price less the value of a vehicle traded in as part of the same transaction (Ark. Code 26-52-510).

Title, registration and fees.

On a $35,000 new car with a $37,000 sticker, registered in Little Rock, no trade-in: the same figures the calculator above uses. The dealership's documentary fee is its own and is not included.

Annual value-based tax: County personal property tax. Assessed at 20% of market value times county/city/school millage; assessed annually and must be paid before registration renewal. Amount varies by county.
