The Model Black way

How The Model Black
works.

From a ZIP code to a delivered car in eight steps, with every number on the table before you go anywhere. The Model Black shows you the numbers; the participating dealership sells the car and completes the purchase directly with you. Scroll to walk through it.

Step 01 of 8

Find itEvery new car, one search, one complimentary account

Every new car in partner inventory, in one search. Create your complimentary account to see The Model Black Savings on each new car.

Start with a model, a body style, or just the monthly payment you are comfortable with. The Model Black pulls live partner inventory and shows each new car in full: year, trim, color, equipment, and a selling price with The Model Black Savings already built in. Under it, the estimated sales tax for where you live, title and registration, and the doc fee, added up to one out-the-door estimate.

Save the ones you like to My Garage and keep going.

Why an account? Participating dealerships show their savings to shoppers who sign in. Creating an account to see pricing is complimentary: an email and a six-digit code, no credit pull, no social security number.

Creating an account sends nothing to any dealership. Your information goes to a dealership only when you send your deal to the one with the car you want.

Step 02 of 8

Set your numberThirty seconds, no credit pull

Your deal profile turns every price on the site into your payment.

Tell us where you live, your credit range, what you are putting down, whether you have a trade, and the term you want. No credit pull, no social security number. The profile is saved in your browser, and to your account when you sign in, and every car is priced from it.

Change one field and every number on the site updates with it. If you would rather start from a payment, set the range you are comfortable with and browse only the cars that land inside it.

Creating an account to see pricing is complimentary, so you can view your savings without the sales pressure. When you are ready to buy, a White Level or Black Level membership covers you and the members of your household at the same address, for as many purchases as you make during its term, and includes an introduction to the participating dealership you choose, so you can complete your purchase directly with them. Membership pricing and the full list of what each level includes are coming soon.

Step 03 of 8

Cash, finance, or leaseThe same car, three estimates side by side

Monthly, one-pay, or with security deposits: the lease math most stores never mention is on the page.

Finance shows the monthly payment at your term with the amount financed and the out-the-door total. Lease shows the monthly payment and what is due at signing, or a single one-pay figure, with the option to place multiple security deposits that lower the payment and come back to you at lease end.

Cash shows the out-the-door number with nothing folded into the fees. If you usually pay cash and keep cars two or three years, ask our Concierge: it runs the depreciation you would absorb against a one-pay lease and shows the difference in dollars.

What the Concierge compares
1Cash out the door, and what the car is likely worth when you sell it
2A one-pay lease, with the money you did not spend still working for you
3Security deposits that buy the payment down and are refunded at the end
All three on every new car. Pick the one that fits how long you keep a car.

Step 04 of 8

Value your tradeAn estimated range in a minute

Your trade is worth what the market says today, not what a book said last quarter.

Enter the VIN and the miles and The Model Black pulls what the same year, trim, and mileage are selling for right now, then hands you a range. Put it into your deal profile and the equity, or the balance you still owe, flows into every payment on the site. Negative equity is priced in, never hidden.

When you send your deal, the dealership looks at your trade and makes its own written offer, which can differ from the estimate. The dealership confirms your trade value in writing before you sign.

Step 05 of 8

Send your dealThe dealer confirms the car, then the deal

You build the deal at the dealer's published price. The dealer confirms the car is available, confirms the deal, and the paperwork comes to you.

When the number looks right, send it. New cars sell at a moment's notice, and the one you want can be gone before you know it, so if you are ready, make your deal before someone else does.

The Model Black does not confirm that a car is available; the dealer does, the moment your deal arrives. The dealer then confirms the price, structure, and fees exactly as published. Nothing is negotiated, because nothing needs to be: the savings and the transparent pricing were up front from the start.

Before you send it, choose from the dealer's options to protect your vehicle and protect yourself financially: extended coverage, maintenance, GAP, tire and wheel, appearance protection, and whatever else the dealer offers. Each one comes with an easy-to-understand description of what it covers and what it costs, plus the information you need to decide whether it makes sense for you, on your own time, without the pressure. Accept the ones you want and decline the rest; the dealer can walk you through anything you declined at signing so you know exactly what you are passing on.

If you are financing or leasing, the dealer works on your approval. If anything changes along the way, the dealer tells you up front, and we are here to help you through it: not to negotiate or haggle, but to help you understand what is going on. The dealer sends the paperwork directly to you.

SignAs the dealership offers

Sign the paperwork with the dealership: in store, through a mobile notary at your door, or remotely, as the dealership offers.

The dealer sends the documents directly to you, printed to the published price, so you can read every line first.

You sign at the dealership unless it offers a mobile notary at your door or remote signing.*

The dealer communicates your approval and anything it still needs from you, and we are here to help with any questions along the way.

DeliveryPick up, or have it come to you

Going in to pick it up? Schedule a time. Staying put? Where the dealership delivers or ships, schedule the delivery, or the shipping, and the car comes to you.

Once the paperwork is verified and complete, the car is released. If you are picking it up, schedule a time at the dealership and get a full walkthrough of the car.

Where the dealership delivers or ships, you can schedule that instead: the dealer brings it locally, or a transporter carries it farther. Where it does not, the vehicle page shows the car priced for pickup at the dealership.

Any delivery or shipping charge, and the way taxes work for where you live and how you take delivery, is shown on your deal before you sign, and our Concierge can walk you through which option fits.

Step 08 of 8

Own itMy Garage

The relationship starts at delivery, and the next deal starts whenever the math says so.

After delivery, the dealership that sold you the car is your first call for service, maintenance, and anything under warranty. My Garage keeps the cars you saved and the ones you are still looking for, whenever you come back.

Ask for a valuation whenever you like and see what it is worth today against what you owe, or what is left on the lease. When a newer car's payment lands close to your current one, or the equity covers the move, an upgrade can cost less than staying put, and the story starts again at step one.

If you leased it, our end-of-lease guide lays out each path: buy out your lease, get a new lease, or turn it in and get into something else, so the decision is made on your schedule, not the bank's.

A membership covers you and the members of your household at the same address, for as many purchases as you make during its term, not just the first.
