Buying a car in Kansas.

By The Model Black · Updated October 7, 2026

Kansas charges sales and compensating use tax of 6.5% at the state level, and local jurisdictions add their own, which brings a typical vehicle to about 9%. A trade-in does reduce the taxable price, which is real money on the deal.

Lease

To see a lease, pick a vehicle. A lease is priced on one car: what it is expected to be worth at the end (its residual) and the leasing company's money factor change by model and by month.

Pick a vehicleHow leasing works

An estimate on the numbers you type, not an offer of credit or a quote from any dealership. Starting loan rates are Rateous's rates for each credit range and term; they are not an offer from any lender. The documentary fee starts at an example figure, the state's legal cap where it has one or $599 where it does not, not any dealership's fee; each dealership sets its own. Taxes and state fees are estimates for Kansas; the dealership's paperwork and your motor vehicle agency have the final numbers. Nothing you type is sent, saved, or used to check your credit.

How the tax works.

The county treasurer collects the higher of the rate where the sale was made and the rate at the vehicle's registration address (Publication KS-1526), so the buyer effectively pays the registration-address rate.

Manufacturer rebates paid directly to the dealer and shown on the bill of sale are exempt from tax since July 1, 2018.

The typical local rate of 2.5% reflects the Johnson County suburbs (Overland Park 9.1% combined) and Wichita/Sedgwick County (7.5%); community improvement districts push some addresses above 11%.

Trade-ins: Trade-in allowance for a motor vehicle or trailer reduces the taxable selling price (K.S.A. 79-3602).

Title, registration and fees.

On a $35,000 new car with a $37,000 sticker, registered in Wichita, no trade-in: the same figures the calculator above uses. The dealership's documentary fee is its own and is not included.

Automobiles 4,500 lbs or less $39.50 per year; over 4,500 lbs $49.50 (K.S.A. 8-143); plus a county service fee and the annual personal property tax on the vehicle.
Annual value-based tax: Motor vehicle personal property tax. Based on the vehicle's MSRP-derived taxable value (30% of value through a statutory depreciation schedule) times the county mill levy, paid at registration. Several hundred dollars per year on a new $40,000 car; varies by county.
