Lease

To see a lease, pick a vehicle. A lease is priced on one car: what it is expected to be worth at the end (its residual) and the leasing company's money factor change by model and by month.

Pick a vehicleHow leasing works

An estimate on the numbers you type, not an offer of credit or a quote from any dealership. Starting loan rates are Rateous's rates for each credit range and term; they are not an offer from any lender. The documentary fee starts at an example figure, the state's legal cap where it has one or $599 where it does not, not any dealership's fee; each dealership sets its own. Taxes and state fees are estimates for Michigan; the dealership's paperwork and your motor vehicle agency have the final numbers. Nothing you type is sent, saved, or used to check your credit.

How the tax works.

No local sales tax in Michigan.

Manufacturer rebates are taxable: the sales tax base is the price before the rebate is applied.

Sales tax on a dealer sale is computed on the RD-108 and remitted with the title application; the trade-in credit does not apply to leases.

Trade-ins: Public Acts 1 and 2 of 2018: trade-in credit started at $5,000 in 2019 and rises $1,000 each January 1 until it exceeds $14,000 (2029), after which the full trade-in value is credited. 2025 cap was $11,000 (Treasury notice 12/27/2024); 2026 cap is $12,000.

Title, registration and fees.

On a $35,000 new car with a $37,000 sticker, registered in Detroit, no trade-in: the same figures the calculator above uses. The dealership's documentary fee is its own and is not included.

Plate fee for 1984 and newer passenger vehicles is a percentage of the MSRP at first titling (MCL 257.801(1)(p)), roughly 0.5% of list price (about $200 on a $40,000 car), then reduced 10% per year for the following three years. The Secretary of State's registration fee calculator gives the exact figure.
Annual value-based tax: Value-based plate (registration) fee. Percentage of original MSRP, reduced 10% per year for three years. The registration fee itself is the value-based charge.
