Lease

To see a lease, pick a vehicle. A lease is priced on one car: what it is expected to be worth at the end (its residual) and the leasing company's money factor change by model and by month.

Pick a vehicleHow leasing works

An estimate on the numbers you type, not an offer of credit or a quote from any dealership. Starting loan rates are Rateous's rates for each credit range and term; they are not an offer from any lender. The documentary fee starts at an example figure, the state's legal cap where it has one or $599 where it does not, not any dealership's fee; each dealership sets its own. Taxes and state fees are estimates for New Jersey; the dealership's paperwork and your motor vehicle agency have the final numbers. Nothing you type is sent, saved, or used to check your credit.

How the tax works.

No local sales tax in New Jersey (Urban Enterprise Zone reduced rates do not apply to motor vehicles).

Manufacturer rebates are included in the taxable receipt (the rebate is consideration from a third party); dealer discounts are not.

Leases longer than six months: the dealer/lessor collects sales tax up front at inception, computed on either the total of the lease payments or the original purchase price (lessor's election), per Publication S&U-12.

Luxury and fuel-inefficient vehicle surcharge: an additional 0.4% of the sales price on new vehicles with a price of $45,000 or more (before trade-in) or an EPA combined rating below 19 mpg (N.J.S.A. 54:32B-8.63 era surcharge, P.L. 2006 c.39). Zero-emission vehicles have been fully taxable at 6.625% since July 1, 2025.
Trade-ins: Trade-in of a motor vehicle to the dealer at the time of sale reduces the taxable receipt.

Title, registration and fees.

On a $35,000 new car with a $37,000 sticker, registered in Trenton, no trade-in: the same figures the calculator above uses. The dealership's documentary fee is its own and is not included.

Annual passenger fee: vehicles within 2 model years and under 3,500 lbs $59; over 3,500 lbs $84 (older vehicles $46.50/$71.50). New vehicles must prepay four years of registration at purchase: $236 for a car under 3,500 lbs, $336 over 3,500 lbs. ZEVs add $250+ per year.

Leasing in New Jersey.

New Jersey taxes a lease up front: the tax on the total of all your lease payments is due in full at signing, not spread across the payments.

Leasing across state lines. New Jersey collects the full tax on a lease up front. For a lease brought in from another state, it allows credit for the other state’s tax only if that state taxes leases the way New Jersey does, by taxing the lessee (S&U-12). A tax imposed on the business rather than on the customer is unlikely to qualify.
